Breaking News! France's September 10th general strike will disrupt transportation and supply chains!

2025-09-10

Social tensions in France have intensified since September. The government's proposed 2026 budget plan has sparked strong discontent with austerity measures, including the cancellation of two public holidays, cuts to healthcare spending, and a pension freeze. Unions and workers from various sectors have launched the "Bloquons tout" (Block Everything) campaign, announcing a nationwide strike on September 10th. Rail, subway, road transport, and airport flights will be severely impacted, potentially bringing France to a complete standstill. Meanwhile, protests in the energy sector have already begun. EDF power workers and some nuclear power plant employees went on strike earlier this month, resulting in a reduction of approximately 2.1 GW of nuclear power production and 510 MW of hydropower, accounting for over 4% of national energy supply. Transport authorities such as Paris's RATP and SNCF have warned of significant operational disruptions, with some Paris metro lines experiencing preemptive restrictions on weekends in early September. Not only transportation and energy, but also major French retail sectors are caught up in the strike. Employees at retail and restaurant chains like Carrefour, Primark, and Flunch are responding to the call, and some shopping malls and supermarkets are expected to close or reduce their hours on September 10th. Overall, the impact of this strike extends beyond public transportation and will impact business operations, supply chain logistics, and all aspects of social life. The CGT maritime union has called on port workers to participate in the action, which could cause congestion and blockades at the terminals, disrupting import and export container transport. Kuehne + Nagel has warned that port terminals will experience severe congestion in the days leading up to the strike, particularly on September 9th, 11th, 17th, and 19th.
