Amidst ongoing turmoil in global trade, the United States has once again sparked a tariff storm. President Trump announced that starting October 1, the US will impose a 100% tariff on imported pharmaceuticals, a 25% tariff on heavy trucks, a 50% tariff on kitchen cabinets and bathroom furniture, and a 30% tariff on upholstered furniture. These measures, justified by "national security," underscore the US's intention to accelerate the repatriation of manufacturing.

Meanwhile, the implementation of the US-EU trade agreement has brought benefits to some sectors. Under the agreement, the US has reduced import tariffs on EU-made cars and parts from 25% to 15%, with retroactive effect from August 1, providing some breathing room for European automakers.

However, the White House later clarified that the 100% tariff on pharmaceuticals is not a blanket policy. For countries with a trade agreement with the US, such as the EU and Japan, the US will maintain the 15% tariff limit.  But the UK is a special case; since the US and UK have not reached a specific agreement on pharmaceutical tariffs, UK pharmaceuticals exported to the US will face a 100% tariff, putting significant pressure on the UK pharmaceutical industry.

These policies send a clear signal: the US is using differentiated tariff strategies to strengthen protection in key areas while maintaining stability in others, aiming to enhance its control over the supply chain. For global businesses, the uncertainty and regional variations in tariffs are becoming core challenges in trade risk management.
